In a historic session, the National Assembly has ratified the 2025 Infrastructure Bill, paving the way for the largest public works project in San Meridian's history.
The comprehensive SMS$4.2 Billion investment package is primarily focused on expanding the nation's high-speed rail network. The project aims to connect the Capital District with several coastal economic zones, significantly reducing travel times and boosting regional trade.
The bill passed with a significant majority, reflecting a cross-party consensus on the need for updated transportation links. "This is a victory for the people of San Meridian," said Assembly Member Elena Varga. "This rail expansion will create thousands of jobs and ensure that our nation remains competitive in the global economy."
Construction is expected to begin in early June, with the first phase connecting the Capital to the Port Meridian terminal. Environmental groups have also praised the bill for its inclusion of sustainable building practices and its potential to reduce the nation's carbon footprint by moving freight from road to rail.
While the bill faced some criticism regarding the projected timeline, government officials remain confident that the core of the network will be operational by the end of 2028.
