Free from who? The Free Meridian Cartel's meteoric rise

The Free Meridian Cartel, a regional smuggling ring based in the island nation of San Meridian, has become the dominant force in the international crime network.

Recently taking a strong footing across San Meridian, the cartel has grown substantially over the last year, with government outcry mounting over the organization's activities. It is believed that corruption, bribery and racketeering have allowed the wholesale development of the organization, with civilians concerned that the national police are unable to maintain control of the situation.

Known through the country's top most wanted list, the leader of the San Meridian Cartel, Señor "El Jefe" Estudente, has been a persistent thorn in the side of law enforcement for years. Racking up charges ranging from extortion and fraud to trafficking and drug manufacturing, Señor Estudente is well known with the law. Despite this unfavourable record, Señor Estudente has managed to curry favour with the locals of the city of Dos Cervezas, believed to be the heart of FMC Activities.

Despite his criminal actions, Señor Estudente has established himself as a community leader within the small city of Dos Cervezas, having established the Estudente Community Center, Estudente Libraries and the wildly popular "El Jefe Burger Hut" chain of restaurants.

Señor Estudente is typically described as a charismatic, warm and friendly individual, with a penchant for community service and a love for his people. He is known to be a skilled negotiator and a master of public relations, often using his influence to sway public opinion in his favor. He is known to associate with higher echelons of San Meridian Society, however where he is unable to gain a foothold in local government, he is also known for being fearlessly aggressive, brutal in his ways, and literally cut throat individual.

Señor Estudente's gentle deportment around child has made him popular in the eyes of the public, however it is believed that, as leader of the FMC, he is directly responsible for the subjugation of hundreds, if not thousands, of San Meridian citizens in the outer suburbs of Dos Cervezas and the surrounding areas. It is believed that the FMC is responsible for the disappearance of 14 year old Maria Rodriguez, who was last seen playing in the park near the Estudente Community Center. Her mother, Elena Rodriguez, have since moved out of the country, fearing for their safety.

The FMC has been attributed with the production of industrial scales of Cocaine, with workers in plantations being put into forced labour, typically being political, civil or community opponents who have oppposed the FMC. Maria Rodriguez was the daughter of Roberto Rodriguez, a prominent San Meridian politician who was a vocal critic of the FMC. Roberto Rodriguez was found dead in his home on February 5, 2026, with the cause of death ruled as a heart attack. However, many believe that he was murdered by the FMC.

The Financial Backbone

The FMC's ability to control local government and maintain a positive public image has allowed them to amass signficant financial and physical assets. It's believed that these organisatins and assets give the FMC the ability to launder and manage their money (in excess of SMS$50 Million) without repurcussion.
